Nor Khalidah binti Hamdan
Petaling Jaya · April 2025
My mother passed without a will, and I had no idea how to begin sorting her estate. Ahmad Nazri walked me through the whole process in the first session — the probate steps, the Faraid entitlements, what the timeline would likely be. It was the first time any of it felt manageable. The written summary he gave me afterwards was something I could actually share with my siblings so we were all on the same page.

I came to prepare a will after putting it off for years. Siti Liyana was patient and thorough — she asked questions I hadn't thought to consider, particularly around my EPF nominations and how they interacted with what I wanted the will to do. The drafting took longer than I expected because we went through a few rounds of revision, but that thoroughness was the point. I left with something I actually feel confident about.

We engaged Sejahtera for a full stewardship engagement following my late father's passing. His estate was complicated — property in two states, a business interest, and some disagreements in the family about how things should be divided. Teck Wai and Ahmad Nazri worked through it methodically and kept us updated throughout. It wasn't quick, but it was handled well and with genuine sensitivity to how difficult the situation was.

I had an estate position review session before deciding whether to go ahead with a formal will. It helped me understand exactly what I needed and what I didn't. The session was calm and clear, and I didn't feel pushed toward taking on more than was necessary. I came back a few months later for the will drafting, and found the same unhurried approach. I appreciated that.

I wanted help understanding how Faraid would apply to our family's situation before we prepared any documents. The session with Ahmad Nazri gave me a realistic picture — including some aspects I hadn't expected, like how certain assets are handled differently from others. It was detailed without being overwhelming. I would have liked a slightly quicker turnaround on the written summary, but it was thorough when it came.

My wife and I have property in Malaysia and Singapore, and we wanted to ensure our wills addressed both properly. Chong Teck Wai was very clear about how to structure things and what we would need to do on the Singapore side separately. He coordinated with our Singapore solicitor as part of the stewardship engagement, which saved us considerable effort. The whole process was handled professionally throughout.
Client Journeys
How engagements have helped families
These accounts are drawn from real engagements, with identifying details changed to protect client privacy.
The Situation
A family of four adult siblings came to Sejahtera following their father's death. He had died without a will, holding assets in two states — a family home in Selangor and a commercial unit in KL — alongside EPF savings and an insurance policy. The siblings had different views on how to proceed, and the estate had been undisturbed for over a year before they sought legal guidance.
What We Did
We began with a position review session with all four siblings present, establishing the full asset picture and the applicable legal framework. We guided the family through the letters of administration process, coordinated with the land registry on both properties, and worked carefully through the Faraid distribution to reach a position the family could agree on. We also assisted with the EPF nomination claim and insurance distribution.
The Outcome
The estate was fully administered and distributed over approximately eight months. The family maintained its cohesion throughout a process that had the potential to become contentious. Following the engagement, two of the siblings instructed us to prepare their own wills.
"They gave us a clear picture when we were lost, and they managed the difficult conversations so we didn't have to."
The Situation
A business owner in his late fifties came to us concerned about how his interest in a family SME would be handled when he passed. The business involved two family members who were active in the operations and two who were not. He wanted to ensure the business could continue without being forced into a sale by inheritance distribution obligations.
What We Did
We prepared a structured estate plan incorporating a testamentary trust for the business interest, coordinated with his accountant on the tax implications, and drafted letters of wishes addressing the family members' respective roles. We also reviewed his existing EPF nominations and life insurance to ensure everything aligned with the broader plan.
The Outcome
A documented estate plan that addressed the client's primary concern — business continuity — while ensuring fair treatment of all beneficiaries. The client has returned for an annual review session as his business position has changed, keeping the arrangement current.
"For the first time I felt the plan actually reflected what I wanted, not just what the law provides by default."
The Situation
A couple in their early forties sought guidance on estate planning for the first time. They had two young children, combined assets including a jointly-owned home, individual savings, and both held EPF accounts. Neither had previously considered what would happen to their children's welfare and financial support if both parents were to pass.
What We Did
We prepared two coordinated wills that addressed guardian appointments for the children, established testamentary trust provisions to ensure funds would be managed responsibly until the children reached adulthood, and reviewed EPF and insurance nominations to align with the overall plan. We also prepared letters of wishes giving context to the decisions they had made.
The Outcome
Two complete, coordinated wills prepared and executed within six weeks. The couple revisited their arrangements two years later following the birth of their third child, updating the documents to reflect the change with minimal additional work required.
"We had been putting this off because it felt complicated. It turned out to be much more manageable than we expected."
